My music tastes

I have a problem. I’m apparently a very mysterious person, at least in terms of what I’ll listen to. I love asking people what they think I listen to, especially my students.

Go ahead. Think about it for a minute (no looking ahead in this post or through this blog for older posts!). What kind of music do you think I listen to?

Okay, got it? Good. Now, I want you to take a look at my last.fm profile. Does that match with what you imagined me listening to? Check out the radio station I now listen to ever since the one I barely tolerated for two years went formatless (and started playing music I don’t like). Does that match?

You can go ahead and pick up your jaw off the floor now.
I think this conversation I had with a pair of students the other night illustrates the normal reaction perfectly:

Student 1: What kind of music do you listen to?

Me: What kind of music do you think I listen to?

Student 1: I don’t know. (turns to Student 2) What kind of music do you think Kiry listens to?

Student 2: *looks at me closely*

Me: *laughing* You’ll never guess. It’s the absolute last thing you’d ever associate with me.

Student 1: Rock!

Student 2: Since it has to be what I’d least expect you to listen to, then it has to be classical or rock.

Me: What kind of rock?

Student 2: Like…heavy metal or just rock. (I took that to mean something other than pop, R&B, hip-hop, etc.) Or maybe techno.

Me: Actually, techno is pretty good, but I listen to rock and some classical. (I didn’t mention that I also listen to new age music.)

For whatever reason, no one expects me to listen to rock. I just don’t get it. Of course, since you’ve just looked at my last.fm profile, you realize my taste covers some pretty disconnected flavors of rock. What’s really funny is that some of my favorite music isn’t even represented in my music collection. I’ve started a list of music I like that needs to find itself into my collection.

So far, the list of Music Amazingly not in my Collection (which you’ve seen if you read me somewhere else because I started talking about this last week):

  • Nickelback
  • Rush
  • Depeche Mode
  • Erasure
  • Dave Matthews Band
  • Sarah MacLachlan

I’ll try to update it as I think of others…
