My studio, ideally

Ever since I started trying to work for myself, I’ve tried to picture the ideal working space for myself. My office is one tiny corner of my room, simply because there isn’t anywhere else it can be at the moment. It’s little more than functional, but I can always listen to music or a movie. Some days, I even throw on tennis shoes and go for a walk or turn up the music and dance.

Lately, though, I’ve been heading into the living room, my current project in hand. The project gets thrown on the floor beside the chair, and I plop down for a run through a couple of (older) video games. Not unexpectedly, about five minutes into the game (which usually coincides with some big battle or puzzle I can’t walk out on), whatever block was lodged in my brain is dislodged, and I can get back to work.

Basically, this leaves me with a studio design that requires at least a small entertainment system so I can listen to music or movies or play games. In my imaginary studio filled with corkboards, whiteboards, bookshelves, and an exercise space, it’s a nice break in the design.

Ideally, it really should have a dart board, too. Somewhere I can release my frustrations. Somewhere I can just be and not have to think. Exercise and video games can’t fix every block!
